Canberra constructions soon to be underway
The construction of 10 Defence houses, funded by the Federal Government's Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan (NB-ESP) will begin in Canberra within the next two weeks. The houses, located in Conder, will inject $2.7 million into the local residential construction industry.
Defence Housing Australia's Managing Director, Michael Del Gigante, was onsite this morning to meet construction workers and DHA staff involved in the project.
"he funding from the Government's Stimulus Plan has enabled us to build these houses," he said.
"Canberra has a very tight housing market. With the construction of additional Defence housing we are enabling more Defence families to live in service residences and easing the pressure on Canberra's private rental market."
The houses will be four bedroom, standalone homes, and many will have picturesque views over the Brindabella Mountain Range. Construction is expected to be completed by January 2010.
Mr Del Gigante also met with two apprentices supported by DHA's Apprenticeship Support Scheme. DHA has created 20 apprenticeship places around Australia. The positions are in areas where there is a high level of Defence housing construction activity in the next few years.
