Top 100 builder backs Nation Building's plans in Tasmania

Ben Wilson, the General Manager of Wilson Homes in Tasmania was very proud that their company was included in the Housing Industry Association (HIA) top 100 builders in Australia over the last three years. This achievement is a first for a Tasmanian building company. However, industry awards are not the only thing that motivates the employees at Wilson Homes.

"The big focus of our business is affordability and for our customers to see value for money and have more options available," Mr Wilson said.

Despite receiving numerous housing awards, dating back to 1994, Wilson Homes look to not only promote themselves as one of Tasmania's leading professional builders but also as a leader in affordable homes in Tasmania.

Over the past eight years that Mr Wilson has been employed in the business, he has seen it go from strength to strength. The company has also recently been awarded a major Federal Government project through Defence Housing Australia (DHA) and the Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan (NB-ESP).

"Through the market growth down in Tasmania our business is certainly continuing to grow and we are the largest builder in Tasmania," Mr Wilson said.

"I've been extremely pleased. Working with DHA was extremely enjoyable, mainly because in Tasmania we often do not get the opportunity to be involved in many Federal Government tenders and contracts."

It is through these strengths that Wilson Homes is becoming increasingly recognised in various areas of the building industry. In 2008, they were the winners of HIA's professional small-medium builder of the year and this year were acknowledged in the prestigious HIA Housing top 100 builders, which is a publication released by Australia’s professional building association each year.

"As far as I am aware we are the first Tasmanian builders to make it into that category," said Mr Wilson, "We hope to make it in there again next year."

Mr Wilson says it not only motivates him but also motivates many of the employees at Wilson Homes to continue to provide quality housing.

"We are a family business and quality is a strong focus of ours. We like to make sure that each employee feels a part of that," Mr Wilson said. "We work hard and we ask a lot of our staff as well, so when they see the awards it is a bit of recognition for each of their efforts."

Above and beyond the awards, Wilson Homes looks to the future of the construction industry in Tasmania.

"Volume is not always necessarily the best outcome and we just want to see consistency and continue to build quality housing."

The ten Defence homes being built in Hobart under the NB-ESP are expected to be completed by April 2010.
