Policies

DHA was established under the Defence Housing Authority Act 1987 and commenced operations on 1 January 1988. Under this Act, DHA is required to provide adequate and suitable housing for:

  • members of the ADF and their families;
  • officers and employees of the Department of Defence and their families; and
  • other persons, in order to meet the operational needs of the Defence Force and the requirements of the Department of Defence.

DHA also complies with the requirements of general policies of the Australian Government as well as specific Defence policies, including the following:

  • Housing Classification Policy (HCP) - a new Defence policy which changes the way Defence classifies Service residences (SRs).
  • Member Entitlement Policy - under the Group Rent Scheme (GRS), service personnel can be provided with housing which is related to their current rank, posting location and number of dependants.
